Dr. Russ Hobbs’ path into Wagyu cattle production is anything but conventional. While serving as a U.S. Navy scuba diver, he was involved in an accident that resulted in a significant back injury. After consulting with multiple doctors, it was chiropractic care that ultimately resolved his issues and changed the direction of his life. Following his discharge from the military due to those injuries, an unexpected opportunity led him to work as a farmhand on a Wagyu operation while he also pursued a career in chiropractic.
That hands-on experience sparked a deep appreciation for cattle genetics and the precision required to produce high-quality, high-marbling beef. Russ immersed himself in the industry, investing in elite bloodlines and proven breeding strategies to build Rebel Wagyu from the ground up, all while establishing his chiropractic practice now located in Grapevine, Texas. Today, with his ranch located less than an hour away in Decatur, Texas, Dr. Hobbs balances both professions—bringing the same discipline, attention to detail, and commitment to excellence to his cattle operation as he does to his patients.
This year, Rebel Wagyu produced 67 head, including 15 Fullbloods and 52 F1s, with an average steer carcass weight of 1,191 pounds. Rebel Wagyu very active within the Texas Wagyu Association, and can be found at most area major sales as well. Dr. Hobbs notes a strong preference for the F1 market, citing solid demand and attractive margins. To support this strategy, Rebel Wagyu commonly utilizes Red Angus genetics in its F1 program, combining consistency, performance, and marketability.
While speaking with Russ, he mentioned he enjoyed the book The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. The book is based on ancient Toltec wisdom that offers a code of conduct for personal freedom, happiness, and love by breaking self-limiting beliefs. The four agreements are: (1) Be impeccable with your word, (2) Don’t take anything personally, (3) Don’t make assumptions, and (4) Always do your best.
