Harold’s journey into cattle started early. “I always knew I wanted to be in the cattle business,” he recalls. “I was always with my granddad, and he was really progressive. He bought better-than-average bulls and retained ownership way back in the 1950s.” After earning his degree in animal production at Colorado State University, Harold studied under Dr. Jim Wittbank, a reproductive physiologist renowned for his work on beef cattle synchronization systems. Combined with his service in the United States Army during the Vietnam War—where he earned a Bronze Star—Harold brought both discipline and dedication to his teaching.
In 1982, the same year Harold became District Manager for American Breeders Service, he married Cheryl. The two have been partners in every sense since. “We live in a society that doesn’t value relationships,” Cheryl reflects. “We value those relationships and many of them last many, many years. Harold has trained three generations in a family more than once.” From 1982 to 1998, Harold held various management roles with ABS Global, eventually becoming Beef Division Sales Manager. But it was teaching that truly captured their hearts.
Their first artificial insemination class came in 1982 at Northeastern Junior College in Colorado. Four decades later, Harold and Cheryl have trained over 7,200 students across eight states, representing producers from 38 states and eight countries. They teach annually at Casper College in Wyoming and conduct custom training sessions at ranches across the region.
What sets the Millers apart is their commitment to making the technical accessible. Cheryl, originally a “city girl,” ensures that every classroom feels welcoming, especially to the roughly half of their students who are women. “She brings the personal touch,” Harold says. Together, they’ve created an environment where newcomers to agriculture don’t feel overwhelmed, and where experienced producers can deepen their technical knowledge. Their curriculum covers not just artificial insemination mechanics, but also genetics, nutrition, herd health, and marketing—giving students a complete picture of modern cattle breeding.
One standout memory illustrates their impact: Brady Haynes, who has been in a wheelchair since age 17, became a successful graduate of their 7 Triangle 7 AI class. “In April of 2021, we trained Brady Haynes. It was one of the most defining moments of our history,” Harold said. “We had a class of 32 and everyone wanted to see him be successful.” That commitment to inclusivity runs through everything they do.
For Wagyu breeders specifically, the value is clear. As more operations embrace frozen genetics, embryo transfers, and genomic selection, the ability to execute artificial insemination with precision becomes a competitive advantage. Harold and Cheryl continue to consult for ranches beyond their teaching schedule, most recently working with Rooney Angus Ranch in Wisconsin.
